Definition: A red grape used to blend with cabernet sauvignon and merlot.

Grown primarily in: United States and France

Best Climate: Hot (typically last varietal to be harvested)

Winemaking: In France and California, it's often blended with cabernet sauvignon and merlot for color.

Nose: Distinct, minty, musky, black cherry.

Mouth: Full body, firm tannins, felty, has texture.

Note: One of the rarest and least planted varietals in California.
